Windows Virus Removal
- Open an email attachment with virus infection.
- Download and install a free program from an unknown publisher.
- Open a Microsoft Excel or Word document infected.
- Run a macro hidden in an Excel spreadsheet.
- Some viruses operate in the background, while others make noticeable changes to your computer. So first step is to always check for unusual signs that may point to an infection. Following are some of the common symptoms.
- Computer appears active even when you are not running any program. You may even hear the sound of your disk drive as it is busy handling data I/O request.
- Computer becomes very sluggish taking a long time to start, or shutdown, or performs simple operations like moving the cursor or opening a program or a file.
- Browser toolbar shows plugins or add-ons that are not added by you or the home page or search engine is automatically redirected to some other site or search engine.
- Computer starts with a blank screen and the only way to start it is by killing the explorer.exe process and restarting it from the Task Manager.
- Assuming you are experiencing some or all or other related symptoms, proceed to Step 2.
- Microsoft Safety Scanner is a free downloadable security tool that provides on-demand scanning and helps remove viruses, spyware, and other malicious software. It works with your existing antivirus software.
- If you can connect to the net, this is the first place to start. If you cannot connect to the net, proceed to Step 3.
- Download Microsoft Safety Scanner from http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=215204.
- Click Download Now, and then follow the instructions on the screen.
- Check if the symptoms pointing to Virus Infection are no longer there. If not, go to Step 4.
- If you can't get to the Microsoft Safety Scanner online, try restarting your computer in safe mode with networking enabled.
- To restart in Safe Mode with networking enabled. Restart your computer. When you see the computer manufacturer's logo, repeatedly press the F8 key until the Advanced Boot Options screen appears.
- On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode with Networking, and then press Enter. Log on to your computer with a user account that has administrator rights.
- Follow the steps above to run the Microsoft Safety Scanner.
- If you have not installed any Antivirus Tool (which maybe the case and the reason your computer is infected), you have the option of trying a free or a paid version of these tools.
- Some viruses are smart and sufficiently nasty that they block the ability to install or add any new program to your computer. In such a situation you probably need an expert to help you.
- Of the free tools out there, Malware Byte Scanner can detect and remove most viruses. And for paid Antivirus you are always better off using tools from leading vendors such as Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky, Trend Micro and others.
