Scan Windows for Virus, Botnets, Malware

Problem Description:
Microsoft offers a number of free tools to scan your computer for viruses. If you do not have a paid Antivirus Software installed, this is a good place to start to check for any virus, botnet, or malware infection. If these tools do not work, you probably need help from a security expert.
Affected Products:
Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and other versions of Windows.
Cause of the Problem:
  • Open an email attachment with virus infection.
  • Download and install a free program from an unknown publisher.
  • Open a Microsoft Excel or Word document infected.
  • Run a macro hidden in an Excel spreadsheet.
Instructions for Scanning Windows for Virus :
Step 1 : Try Microsoft Safety Scanner
  1. Microsoft Safety Scanner is a free downloadable security tool that provides on-demand scanning and helps remove viruses, spyware, and other malicious software. It works with your existing antivirus software.
  2. Microsoft's Safety Scanner can be downloaded for free at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=215204, and runs on all Windows operating system versions.
  3. One thing you need to remember is that Microsoft Safety Scanner expires 10 days after being downloaded. To rerun a scan with the latest anti-malware definitions, you will have to download and run the Microsoft Safety Scanner again.
  4. Microsoft Safety Scanner is not a replacement for more advanced Antivirus Software that continuously and automatically are updated with the latest antivirus signatures.
Step 2 : Try Malicious Software Removal
  1. Microsoft Safety Scanner (MSS) & Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) serve different purpose.
  2. MSS will review your computer on-demand for any viruses or malware. MSS is a simple tool for concerned users that will check for everything Microsoft knows about.
  3. MSRT is specifically targeted at a small number of malware (specifically common botnets), and is not designed as much to be run manually.
  4. If you have Windows Update enabled there is nothing you need to do. As part of Windows Update the tool is already installed on your computer and is automatically behind the scene scanning your computer for bots.
  5. If you have not enabled Windows Update, you can download the tool from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/malicious-software-removal-tool-details.aspx, and install and run it for scanning your computer.
Step 3 :Try Microsoft Security Essential
  1. Microsoft Security Essential is a full-blown Antivirus Software that not only can check your computer in real-time for viruses and malware, but also do so manually, on-demand if you suspect an infection.
  2. Before installing Microsoft Security Essentials, we recommend that you uninstall other antivirus software already running on your PC. Running more than one antivirus program at the same time can potentially cause conflicts that affect PC performance.
  3. To download Microsoft Security Essentials, go to http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5201.
  4. Download and install the software, and run the manual scan to check your computer.
