Microsoft Security Essential Alert Levels (Explained)

Problem Description:
When Microsoft Security Essentials detects a potential threat, it assigns an alert level to the threat. Alert levels help you choose how to respond to viruses, spyware, and other potentially unwanted software. Not all software that is flagged is malicious or unwanted, hence it is important to understand these different alert levels.
Affected Products:
Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and other versions of Windows.
Cause of the Problem:
  • Not Applicable.
Alert Level Explanation :
Step 1 : Severe Alert Level
  1. Severe alert level indicates that you need to take immediate action to remove the infection of your computer. MSE has detected highly malicious programs, similar to viruses or worms, which can negatively affect your privacy and the security of your PC, and can even damage your PC.
  2. Unless you've changed the default settings, Microsoft Security Essentials will attempt to remove malicious software automatically, helping protect your computer from potential infection.
  3. Occasionally you may be prompted by MSE, to remove a detected software. In such case, you should take action recommended by MSE.
Step 2 :High Alert Level
  1. High level alerts are typically Spyware or other such programs that program collect information or changes settings, typically without your knowledge or consent. This information can be used to show ads and pop-ups while browsing the web.
  2. Unless you've changed the default settings, Microsoft Security Essentials will attempt to remove malicious software automatically, helping protect your computer from potential infection.
  3. Occasionally you may be prompted by MSE, to remove a detected software. In such case, you should take action recommended by MSE.
Step 3 : Medium Alert Level
  1. These are programs that might affect your privacy or make changes to your PC that could negatively impact your computing experience. For example, the program collects personal information or changes settings.
  2. Review the alert details to see why the software was detected. If you don't like what the software does or if you don't recognize and trust the publisher, consider blocking or removing the software.
Step 4 : Low Alert Level
  1. This is potentially unwanted software that might collect information about you or your PC or it might change how your computer works. However, the software is operating in agreement with the Microsoft Software License Terms displayed when you installed the software.
  2. This software is typically benign when it runs on your PC, unless it was installed without your knowledge. If you're not sure whether to allow it, review the alert details, or check to see if you recognize and trust the software publisher.
