Enable or Disable Windows Defender
- Not Applicable.
- Windows Defender can prevent spyware and other potentially unwanted software from running on your computer. It's a free tool from Microsoft. If you do not have any other paid or free third-party Antivirus or Spyware control tool, then it is a good idea to turn Windows Defender on.
- To turn Windows Defender On, Open Windows Defender by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button.
- In the search box, type Defender, and then, in the list of results, click Windows Defender.Click Tools, and then click Options.
- Click Real-time protection, and then select the Use real-time protection check box. Select the options you want, and then click Save.
- Note that some 3rd party antivirus (AV) programs may turn off Windows Defender when they are installed to be used instead, and will not allow Windows Defender to be turned back on until the 3rd party AV has been uninstalled or disabled.
- If you have installed another paid or free Antivirus software, then it is generally not advisable to enable Windows Defender. Multiple Antivirus or Spyware protection tools can create conflicts and don't provide additional protection. So best you stick with only one software to protect your computer.
- To disable Windows Defender's Real-Time Protection, Open the Control Panel (icons view), and click/tap on the Windows Defender icon.
- In Windows Defender, click/tap on the Settings tab, Real-time protection in left pane, uncheck the Turn on real-time protection box, and on Save Changes.
- If prompted by UAC, then click/tap on Yes.
- You will now notice the message from Action Center notification area icon letting you know that Widows Defender real-time protection has been turned off.
