Problem Description:
The update process just hangs, stuck on the 'Downloading updates' stage with the circle activity indicator just going around and around. Or you may get an error code pop-up that says “Norton Error 3048-3 Unable to Fix” or other such pop-up. Norton Antivirus signatures need to be updated regularly to ensure your computer is protected from new viruses.

Norton 360; Norton 360 Premier Edition; Norton Internet Security; Norton AntiVirus; Norton Internet Security for Mac; Norton AntiVirus for Mac
Cause of the Problem:
  • Norton Live update server maybe facing temporary downtime or congestion.
  • Computer maybe infected by a Virus or other Malicious software.
Instructions for Fixing the Norton Update Problem :
Step 1 : Retry Update to see if Live Update Connection is Problem
  1. Norton LiveUpdate is an application developed by Symantec Corporation that downloads and installs security updates such as spyware, firewall, or antivirus signature files.
  2. Norton Live Update can occasionally malfunction and terminate connection with your computer.
  3. For Norton Security or Norton Security with Backup: Click Help, and then select Get Support.
  4. For Norton 360 or Norton Internet Security or Norton AntiVirus: Click Support, and then select Get Support.
  5. Restart your computer, and try installation again. If it still fails go to Step 2.
Step 2 : Manually Update Virus Signatures
  1. Go to the Intelligent Updater downloads page. http://www.symantec.com/security_response/definitions/download/detail.jsp?gid=n95.
  2. This is the Symantec & Norton website where you can find the latest versions of antivirus signatures.
  3. Depending on the version of Windows, download the appropriate file.
  4. For Windows 8/7/Vista/XP 32-bit: Click the first file in the list under Filename. The file name starts with the year and ends with v5i32.exe. e.g. 20070828-017-v5i32.exe.
  5. Save the program to the Windows desktop. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the virus definitions using Intelligent Updater.
  6. If the problem persists, then your computer may be infected. Go to Step 3.
Step 3 : Check computer for any virus or malware infection
  1. Norton Power Eraser is a free virus removal tool that can be downloaded and run to remove malware and threats from your computer.
  2. Download Norton Power Eraser. Select the location as Desktop, and then click Save.
  3. To run Norton Power Eraser, double-click the NPE.exe file. If the User Account Control window prompts, click Yes or Continue.
  4. In the Norton Power Eraser window, click the Scan for Risks icon. When you see a prompt to restart the computer, click Restart.
  5. Wait for the scan to complete. Exit all the programs, and restart your computer.
