Norton Slows Down Computer

Problem Description:
This is a common issue that users face not just with Norton products but also other security products from companies such as McAfee, Kaspersky, Trend Micro, and others. Antivirus software often run in the background checking for files and data, and require a lot of memory and processor time. This often slows down the computer.
Affected Products:
Norton 360; Norton 360 Premier Edition; Norton Internet Security; Norton AntiVirus; Norton Internet Security for Mac; Norton AntiVirus for Mac
Cause of the Problem:
  • Third-party or unwanted browser plug-ins causing browser to be slow.
  • Multiple antivirus security programs running and creating conflicts.
  • Possible infection from a virus or other malicious software.
Instructions for Fix Slow Computer Problem :
Step 1 : Check Browser Toolbars and Plugins
  1. Start the browser you use for surfing the net.
  2. Depending on your browser, do one of the following.
  3. For Internet Explorer: On the Tools menu, click Manage Add-ons.
  4. For Mozilla Firefox: On the top-right corner, click the Open menu icon, and click Add-ons. In the Add-ons Manager page, select Extensions.
  5. For Google Chrome: On the top-right corner, click the Customize and control Google Chrome icon, and click Settings. Under Chrome, click Extensions.
  6. Select the add-ons one at a time and disable them.
  7. If the browser is fast, the problem is with one of the toolbars. Enable the browser plug-in one at a time to find the malicious one, and keep it disabled.
Step 2 : Uninstall any third-party non-Norton security software.
  1. Check if you have any third-party Security or Firewall software present.
  2. Open the “Add or Remove Program” control panel applet.
  3. If you find a Non-Norton security software, select it, and uninstall it.
  4. Test the speed of your computer by performing common tasks such as browsing, opening Microsoft Office applications, and other such task.
  5. If the problem persists go to Step 3.
Step 3 : Check for any Virus Infection
  1. Download the Norton’s Power Eraser tool from https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/norton-download-install/current/solutions/kb20100824120155EN_EndUserProfile_en_us.
  2. Follow the instructions to install this tool, and scan your computer for viruses, and retry downloading Norton Security software.
