Problem Description:
Norton often is preinstalled on new computers and sometimes it is hard to completely uninstall this software. The Windows Add/Remove Program sometimes does not work. Or after uninstalling it, some Norton services remain and run in background slowing computer or conflicting with other software. If you try stopping service manually you may get "Access Denied" error.
Affected Products:
Norton 360; Norton 360 Premier Edition; Norton Internet Security; Norton AntiVirus; Norton Internet Security for Mac; Norton AntiVirus for Mac
Cause of the Problem:
  • Norton installation or configuration files may be corrupted.
  • Norton upgrade or an installation was only partially completed.
  • Conflict with another security software is blocking installation.
Instructions for Fixing the Norton Uninstallation Problem :
Step 1 : Try removing Norton using Windows Installer
  1. Open the “Add or Remove Program” control panel applet.
  2. Find Norton Security software, select it.
  3. Uninstall Norton Security with Windows Installer.
  4. Go to Step 2.
Step 2 : Remove completely older version of Norton
  1. Windows Installer sometimes fails to completely remove all Norton files.
  2. Norton has a specialized tool called Norton Removal Tool.
  3. Norton Removal Tool uninstalls all Norton 2003 and later products, Norton 360, from your computer. Make sure that you have the installation CDs to reinstall the product.
  4. Download the Norton Removal Tool & Save the file to the Windows desktop.
  5. On the Windows desktop, double-click the Norton Removal Tool icon. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  6. Restart your computer. After the computer restarts, follow the on-screen instructions to reinstall your Norton product. If it still fails go to Step 3.
Step 3 : Uninstall any third-party security software.
  1. Check if you have any third-party Security or Firewall software present.
  2. Open the “Add or Remove Program” control panel applet.
  3. If you find a Non-Norton security software, select it, and uninstall it.
  4. Try installing Norton software.
