How to Configure Norton 360

Problem Description:
Norton 360 configurations can be complex since it includes a number of different products. It includes an antivirus program, a personal firewall, a phishing protection program, and a backup program. In this instruction tip we will cover only the different options for configuring Norton 360 Firewall. Configuring Firewall entails specifying in detail how to handle incoming and outgoing connections for your PC. You can specify Traffic rules and rules for specific programs. You can also specify how you want Norton 360 to handle intrusion attempts and browser protection. This note does not cover all the settings, but provides an overview of the main ones you should be aware of.
Affected Products:
Norton 360; Norton 360 Premier Edition
Cause of the Problem:
  • Not Applicable.
Instructions Configuring Norton 360 (Firewall)
Step 1 : General Firewall Configuration Settings
  1. Automatic File/Printer Sharing Control: Allows the computers on the network to share resources such as files, folders, and printers. Firewalls can often interfere with your printer sharing. So it helps to enable this setting.
  2. Firewall Reset to Default Settings: This returns Norton Smart Firewall to its default state. If you suspect the Firewall is causing an application or internet connection to not work, you may want to reset the Firewall. Resetting the firewall will remove any custom rules or settings that you have configured.
Step 2 : Firewall Intrusion Settings
  1. Intrusion Prevention protects your computer against common Internet attacks by scaning all the network traffic that enters and exits the computer and compares it against a set of attack signatures.
  2. Intrusion Prevention relies on a list of attack signatures to detect and block suspicious network activity. Norton 360 runs LiveUpdate automatically to keep your list of attack signatures up to date.
  3. The Intrusion Protection setting includes the Download Intelligence option to protect your computer against any unsafe file that you download. Download Intelligence provides information about the reputation level of any executable file that you can use to decide whether you want to install or not the executable file.
Step 3 : Smart Firewall Advanced settings
  1. These settings let you activate the advanced protection features of Smart Firewall by turning off Automatic Program Control.
  2. Automatic Program Control automatically configures Internet access settings for the web-enabled programs that are run for the first time. You can configure the Automatic Program Control option to the following settings.
  3. Aggressive - Allows Norton 360 to alert you when it detects a program with Unproven or Poor trust level receiving inbound traffic.
  4. Automatic - Allows Norton 360 to automatically take decisions when a program receives inbound or outbound traffic. When you select this option, Norton 360 does not prompt you with any firewall alerts.
  5. Off - Turns off Automatic Program Control. If you have selected this option, you must manually specify the Internet access settings for all inbound traffic and outbound traffic in the firewall alerts.
